The Honda TRX420 Fourtrax is one of the most popular farm quads in the UK, and plenty of buyers look at a used one before buying new. Here is how a new LONCIN XWolf 550 AGRI or XWolf 550 compares with a used TRX420, and with the bigger Honda Foreman, on price, specification and the costs that are easy to miss.

One example stood out in our research: a two-year-old, two-wheel-drive TRX420 advertised at £5,495 + VAT. That is exactly the price of a brand-new XWolf 550 AGRI with selectable 4WD and diff lock.

The costs that are easy to miss
A working farm quad that is a few years old will usually have hours on it, and some jobs will be due. Common ones are CV joints and boots, wheel bearings, swingarm and suspension bushes, brakes and tyres. As a guide, a front driveshaft for a TRX420 costs around £140 and a set of four quality farm tyres over £600, before fitting. Check the hours against the mileage too: on a typical farm quad they should roughly match (around 1,000 hours to 10,000km). Much higher mileage for the hours suggests hard use.
Power steering and towing
Many used TRX420s are base models without power steering. The XWolf 550 has electronic power steering as standard, and both XWolf models have more than double the published towing capacity of the TRX420.
Warranty and peace of mind
Every new LONCIN comes with a 2-year, unlimited-mileage warranty covering parts and labour, backed by your local dealer. A private used sale comes with no warranty, and most used dealer sales offer limited cover at best. A nearly-new machine may still have some of its original manufacturer warranty left, so it is worth asking.
Check it is not stolen
Quad theft is a real problem: NFU Mutual’s 2026 Rural Crime Report estimated quad and ATV theft cost £3.5m in 2025, up 31%. When buying used, check the frame number has not been ground off or altered and matches the paperwork, ask for the original invoice, look for CESAR markings, run a provenance check, and view the machine at the seller’s premises rather than a lay-by. Buying new from a dealer removes that risk.
A note on VAT
New LONCIN prices are shown excluding VAT, as are most dealer used prices. A private sale carries no VAT. If your business is VAT-registered you can usually reclaim VAT on a new machine, so the ex-VAT figures are the fair comparison. If you are not VAT-registered, add 20% to any price quoted + VAT.
When a used Honda makes sense
A used TRX420 with a full service history can be a sensible buy, especially as a second machine or for lighter work. Hondas have an excellent reputation for reliability, a large UK dealer network and strong resale values.

For the price of a good two- or three-year-old TRX420, you can buy a new XWolf 550 AGRI or XWolf 550 with a bigger, more powerful engine, 4WD with diff lock, more than double the towing capacity, road-legal approval and a full 2-year warranty.
